January 2025 marked a huge milestone for Ocean Thinkers, as we officially launched the Ocean Thinkers Club and what an incredible start it’s been. What began as a simple idea to spark curiosity, connection, and care for our oceans through increasing ocean literacy skills, has alre

ady grown into a vibrant community of 150 children stretching from towns around Brisbane, along the east coast of NSW, inner-city Melbourne, Victorian coastlines, and all the way across to Adelaide and Tasmania.

From day one, our mission has been clear: to nurture ocean literacy and empower the next generation of custodians. Seeing so many young people sign up to be part of this movement is both humbling and energising. It speaks volumes about the passion Australian families have for protecting our marine environments and the hunger for hands-on, accessible, and meaningful ways to get involved.

What the Club Offers

Throughout the year, our Ocean Thinkers will curated bi-monthly ocean literacy activities designed to help them explore, question, and better understand the incredible ecosystems beneath the surface. Whether they’re examining the science of tides, learning about the importance of kelp, building simple conservation habits at home, or considering their own impact on the ocean, each mailout opens up new windows into ocean literacy.

We’ve also loved seeing early photos and messages from families, kids proudly wearing their Ocean Thinkers gear, finding treasures on the beach, and sharing drawings of their favourite sea creatures. These early signs of connection and creativity are exactly why the Club exists.

Why This Matters

Our oceans are facing unprecedented challenges, but they’re also full of wonder. The Ocean Thinkers Club is built on a simple belief: when children fall in love with the ocean, they’re more likely to protect it. If we can inspire curiosity and empower action now, we’re investing in a future where more people understand the role oceans play in climate, culture, and community.

A National Community from Day One

Reaching families across five states in our very first month has been nothing short of extraordinary. It reflects the growing, nationwide momentum around marine education. Whether a child is dipping their toes in Queensland’s subtropical waters or learning about giant kelp forests in Tasmania, they’re part of the same shared story, one of understanding, stewardship, and hope.

What’s Next

This is only the beginning. Over the coming months, we’ll continue to expand the Club’s activities and offer more ways for children and families to engage with ocean learning and conservation.

A massive thank-you goes to every family who joined us for 2025. Your support has given Ocean Thinkers the strongest start we could have imagined, and we can’t wait to see how this community grows and evolves throughout 2025.

Here’s to curious minds, salty stories, and a future shaped by young people who care deeply about the sea.

COMMUNITY

Ocean Thinkers acknowledges that the lands and waters on which we live, swim, explore and play, whilst beautiful and respected by us, have even deeper layers of significance for Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past, present and emerging.
